Selection and Recruitment of New Trustees and Governors

Policy for the Selection & Recruitment of New Trustees & Governors

The Richmond West Schools Trust (RWST), and its local governing bodies (LGBs), aims to maintain a full and active membership, with each member of the team taking an active and meaningful role in driving forward school improvement.  Improving outcomes for children must remain at the heart of everything we do, and we must ensure we are equipped with the appropriate skills and experiences to draw on in order to achieve this.

When recruiting new governors, we will work within the guidelines set out in the The School Governance (Constitution) (England) Regulations 2012 and subsequent amendments to those regulations.  We are also bound by the current constitution of our board (Articles of Association).

Process for recruitment of non-elected governors.

Where there is no requirement for a governor to be elected, the Trust and/or local governing body may choose to select individuals to join the board(s) on the basis of their specific skills and experience.  This should be done to plug any skills gaps that exist.

The Trust and/or LGBs will select individuals via a number of sources:

Applications may be invited from parents or the wider community, and the most suitable candidates will be selected.

The Trust will work with central resources/organisations that aim to connect potential governors with appropriate vacancies.

Individuals may be approached and asked to consider a particular vacancy.

Once a candidate has been identified, the Trust and/or LGBs will take the following course of action:

The candidate will meet with the Chair of the Trustees and the Chair of the LGB (and other governors as appropriate) to discuss the requirements of the role.

The Chair of the Trustees and/or the Chair of the LGB will arrange for the candidate to meet the Headteacher to give both parties an opportunity to find out more.

The candidate will be given an opportunity to attend one or more meetings prior to joining the board LGB (subject to the timings of forthcoming meetings).

The candidate will be officially invited to join the LGB and the Trust Induction Policy will take effect.

Process for recruitment of elected governors

The Clerk will issue a letter to all relevant parties to give notification of the vacancy. Required skills will be outlined, as will the timetable for the election process.

The above letter will invite nominations from interested parties, to be accompanied by a personal statement to be issued to voters.

If there are more candidates than vacancies, voting will take place within an agreed timeframe, and the candidate with the majority of the votes will win.  The Trustees will have the final say in the event of a tie.

The candidate with the most votes will be advised of their success by the Chair of the Trustees or the Chair of the LGB or other nominated individual.

If there is only one nomination, that candidate will automatically take the post.

Elected governors take up a 4-year term and must be re-elected after that time.
