Sixth Form FAQs

What will the sixth form be like?

Hampton High Sixth Form is a friendly co-educational sixth form offering a range of A Levels and excellent pastoral care. Selected vocational courses, GCSE or equivalent, will also be offered. Students will have an outstanding tutorial programme and a wide range of extra-curricular activities, trips, visits and work experience that will set our students apart when applying for university. Hampton High Sixth Form students will be separate from the school but they will have the opportunity to take on leadership roles in the wider Hampton High community that will help prepare them for their next steps.

Why should students study in the sixth form at Hampton High?

Hampton High has a reputation for offering a supportive, caring and academic environment which provides guidance for our students. Students will have the opportunity to study with staff who know them well and are highly qualified subject specialists. There will be state of the art new facilities fully equipped to provide for the needs of the sixth form. Finally we believe that the wider experiences and enrichment we offer is central to our ethos. We want our sixth form students to work hard and enjoy the social aspect that is unique to the sixth form environment because they should enjoy learning, feel empowered and achieve outstanding results.

What will the timetable be like?

Students will choose 3/4 AS levels and then most students will take 3 subjects through to A level. Students will have two hours of enrichment every week in Year 12 and 1.5 hours of tutorial time for study skills and PHSE. Each student will also have study periods on their timetable and they will be expected to work in the study base during this time. The school site will be open until 6pm Monday to Thursday for study support and use of the library and IT facilities.

What is Hampton High doing about the changes to A Levels?

In 2015 we will continue to expect all students to study 3/4 AS subjects and take the AS exam in June. We will review this decisions for September 2016 in line with national guidance.

What extra activities will be on offer?

There will be considerable additional opportunities for students in the sixth form which include competitive sport for boys and girls, recreational sport, enrichment clubs, university visits, charity and community projects and cultural enrichment. Visits to theatres, galleries and museums will form a rich thread through the Hampton High Sixth Form experience. All our sixth form students will take part in work experience and job shadowing to help them make critical decisions about their future careers. There will also be a range of team sports, elite coaching and personal fitness opportunities for sixth form students to access across the year.

What is the sixth form building like?

The students have access to the Hampton High Sixth Form block which includes: kitchen facilities, social and study areas which will have ICT facilities. It will also include a new astro court, tennis courts, sports hall and there are canteens across the site which the students can purchase food and refreshments. The sixth form block will be for students in Year 12 and 13. Hampton High Sixth Form students may have some specialist lessons, such as music, art or drama in the main school. Our art students have access to their own art studio which they can use during their study time.

Will there be careers advice?

Specialist careers advice will be given. Planning for successful progression to university, training or employment will form the backbone of the sixth form experience. Additional coaching will be provided for applications to competitive universities such as Oxbridge and The Russell Group and courses in medicine, dentistry and veterinary science. Students will be supported through this process carefully so that they can make informed decisions and prepare for the next step. Your Study Programme will include employability skills, knowledge of the labour market and specific work experience that links to your next steps.

Will there be computers that students can use in school to study?

Yes, there will be IT suites and PCs in the sixth form study area for use by students in and out of lessons. You will also be able to bring your own devices into school.

Will there be external students?

Yes, we welcome students from both within our school and local community.

Will current Hampton High students be guaranteed a place?

No, there are places for 140 students in each year. There is an admissions policy including full criteria for oversubscription.

Will there be a Head of Year?

Ms Weaver and Miss Metcalfe are the Co-Leaders of Sixth Form and share the responsibility of the two year groups.

Will sixth form students be in a tutor group?

Yes, there will be sixth form tutor groups to offer excellent pastoral care with a programme of activities to inform, support and guide students through sixth form life. Tutor time will be an important part of your study programme and will include academic monitoring, study skills, well-being and a range of issues that relate to life after sixth form.

Will there be a uniform?

No, but there will be a smart dress code. We expect students to dress smartly in the sixth form and they will have the same dress code as other adults in the school.

Will students be allowed to bring phones to school?

Yes, we will have clear guidance on phones so that they do not disrupt lessons.

Will students be allowed to bring laptops to school?

Yes, there will be secure internet access in the new sixth form building which will also be developed across the school.

Will students be able to smoke at school?

No, we do not allow staff or sixth form students to smoke on site.

How do I apply?

Students wishing to apply for September 2016 should apply on-line via UCAS Progress from Thursday 1 October. Please check the school website nearer the time for more advice.
